Week 14 - Final project

Week 13 - Graphic composition and visual harmony

1) Main homework
    a. Please let someone take a picture for yourself. Explain to the photo-taker what kind of result you want to get, with the rules and principles of graphic composition in mind. Write a 200-250 words essay to describe/critic the picture, using languages/vacabulary from graphic composition and rules of visual harmony (please underline the names of the rules and principles). Print out this essay, together with your picture in color, both on 8.5x11 paper. Due on Monday (Nov 19th, 2012).
    b. Please draw the picture as photo real with color (press hard and color solidly with your colorpencils) and all the details. Do this on 8.5x11 paper (the paper from 14x17 sketchbook preferrable, cut into 8.5x11"). Due on Monday (Nov 26th, 2012).

2) Copy sketches
    Please copy both of the following skethes. Both due on Wednesday (Nov 28th, 2012).




3) Graphic journal
    a. Please do one of the two graphic journals about "bird(s) and tree". I recommend you to go out and observe this scene in real life, take a picture and draw from your picture. This is due on Monday (Nov 19th, 2012).
    b. Thanksgiving week: please do one of the two grphic journals about a scene in the coffee shop. Do this when you actually sit in a coffee shop and observe the interior design (decoration and furnature) and people's social interaction. This is due on Monday (Nov. 26th, 2012).

Week 12 - Drawing on black paper and outdoor sketches

1) Main homework: please finish the drawings on the black paper as we talked in class on Monday.

2) Copy sketch:
    Please select one of the following sketches to copy. From the first two architecture sketches, please pay attention to the size of the buildings in each image, and when you draw the buildings, you should avoid drawings too large, because you need to have space for landscape and the environment. Also, please take a close look at how to draw water (wave and reflection) and trees.
    The third drawing is an interior sketch. If you choose to copy this one, please draw everthing on the same page, which means you can draw each interior setup small.
    Congratulations on your improvements in free-hand drawing!! Enjoy!
   






3) Please do one of the graphic journals about your favorite model of a transportation tool (vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle, etc.), and it doesn't have to be your belonging. I encourage you to use color on this one. As usual, you can draw anything you'd like in the other journal.

Week 11 - Photo-real micro drawing

1) Main homework:
    Please finish the group project of drawing the assigned materials. Before doing the drawing, please pay close obervation to the surfact texture of the material, and then draw with great details. Fully colored and shaded.

2) Copy sketch:
    Please choose to copy one of the following sketches.




3) Graphic journal:
    Please do one of the two graphic journals to draw a scene/set-up in one of your classrooms. It could be a corner in the classroom, your classmate(s), you table/desk, or something happened in the classroom. It does not have to be colored.

Week 9 - Color theory

1) Major homework:
    Please finish the "four-box" drawing on the 14x17" sketchbook with the following color schemes: 1) primary or secondary colors, 2) analogous colors, 3) warm colors or cool color, and 4) two pairs of complementary colors. Finish in ordinary color pencil, and no water color needed. Solid shading. Here are some examples of shading with color pencil.



2) Copy sketch
    Please select one of the following sketch to copy on the 9x12" sketchbook. Please ignore any of the signiture in the example drawings. If you choose to do the fashion sketch, please also color it with watercolor pencil.




3) Graphic Journal:
    Please do one of the two graphic journals about an autumn scene that is going on right now. It can be a scene of the nature, or some holidays, or activities people do in the season. Please use color for this drawing.

Week 8 - Space/form, perspective and photoshop

1) Major homework:
    Please use pencil to finish the banana sketch as showed below. Do it on the 14x17 sketchbook, and please leave half an inch as the border. As you do this drawing, please pay attention to the shape and form of the object, as well as the contrast of darkness/brightness of the drawing.


2) Copy sketch:
    Please use pen to finish the following copy sketch on your 9x12 sketchbook. When you do the drawing, try to use pencil as little as possible (nobody expects the drawing to be perfect, so please just relax and enjoy : ).



3) Graphic journal:
    Please do one of the journals about something you really like about yourself (it could be something you enjoy doing, some sports you could do well, your favorite person or pets).

Week 7 - Mid-term Exam

1) Graphic Journal:
    This week, for both graphic journals, you can draw whatever you would like to. Please consider adding some colors into the drawings (using color pencil, water color or markers), as we will move on to the color section pretty soon. Have a good weekend!

Week 6 - Field Sketches

1) Main homework:
    Please use pencil to draw one of the three locations that we stoped at on Monday class: the English building, the library and the west facade of Chemistry building. Please pay close attention to the architectural propotiaon, scale, light/shadow, building materials, surface texture and decrative details. Also, please include the context of the building (landscape, people, and leave space for the sky, etc.). Do it as much detailed as you could on the 14x17 sketchbook, 1/2" boarder on four sides.

2) Copy sketches:
    Please copy the following sketch on your 9x12 sketchbook. Finish in pen.

3) Graphic Journal:
    Please do one of the two graphic journals drawing one of your favorate pair of shoes.

Week 5 - Light, Shade and Shadow

1) Major homework:
    Please use four pieces of items from your everyday life to do a still life drawing. Examples are given below. Please select the items of different height and surface texture. Identify the direction of the light source and therefore you could identify which are the shading areas on the objects and what's the direction of the cast shadows. If necessary, please use a lamp as to intensify the power of the light source, where you can do a drawing that is defined by stronger brightness/darkness contrast.
    Please do this drawing on 14x17 sketchbook. Half-an-inch border. Pencils only. Draw as much detailed as you could.



2) Copy Sketch
    Please copy the following two sketches on your 9x12 sketchbook. Finish in pen.



3) Graphic Journal
    Please do one of the journals about something you usually do before you go to sleep at night, like reading a book, call your parents, watch movie, etc. As usual, for the other journal you are allowed to draw anything you are interested in.

Week 4 - Perspective Drawing 2

1) Major homework: archiecture building hallway drawing
    You can choose to do it on any floor in the building. Please use various kinds of graphic pencils to do the hallway drawing on 14x17" sketchbook. Please do this drawing using one-point perspective, and do it as you sit on site and observe, but not from a photograph of the site. Please do this drawing as much detailed as you could (perspective of the space, proportion of the objects, all the objects in your sight, including people, pinups on the wall, collumns and windows, materials of the objects and shading.) Here are some examples of this project.




2) Copy sketches
    Please use pens to copy the following two sketches on you 9x12 sketchbook.



3) Graphic journal
    On one of the journals, please field sketch one of your favorite buildings on campus. Please draw it as much detailed as you could. And as usual, do the other journal anything you would like. Remember text and date on both journals.

Week 3 - Perspective Drawing 1

A. Major homework:
    Please use wooden graphic pencil (HB or 2B) or graphite stick to draw the arch structure (including the low walls) on south side of the Rec Center from 3 different point-of-views. Please do this on the 14x17 sketchbook. Please grasp accurate shape of your drawing object, as you see from the chosen point of view. Draw as much detail as you could.

B. Copy sketches:
    Please choose to copy one of the following one-point perspective drawings.



C. Graphic journal:
    Please do draw your dorm room or apartment living room for one of the journals using one point perspective. And for the other journal, draw anything you would like to. Please always do the drawings to your full potential and ability. Text and date are needed.

Week 2 - Form and Space

A. Main homework:
Please do 3 positive/negative space drawings as we talked about in class today.

B. Copy sketches:
Please copy from the following two sketches on your 9x12 sketch book. Please use pens and markers. Pay attention to the thicknesses and darkness of different lines (it is called "Line Weight"). Erase all pencil lines when finish.



C. Graphic journals

1) Please do one of the journals using positive/nagative space to draw one of your meals. Positive spce use creative patter, and negative space use solid black please. Erase all pencil lines when finish.

2) Please do another journal anything you wish. Please do this drawing to your full potential. Don't forget to put text and date.

Week 1 - Lines

A. Copy Sketches (due on next Wednesday, at the beginning of class):

1) 9x12" sketchbook. Micron pen 02, and one page-full.
 2) 9x12" sketchbook. Please use various pens from the Micron kit according to the change of brightness/darkness (line weight) in the image.

B. Main homework (due on next Monday, at the beginning of class):
    Please use HB pencil to drawing your watch with lines on 9x12" sketchbook. Draw as much detailed as you could. Do not worry about shading/shadowing yet for this drawing.

C. Graphic journal (due on next Monday, at the beginning of class) - please include date and description text in each journal, use the small sketchbook:
    Journal one - use lines to draw your one of your favorite plants (a flower/ tree leaves/ bushes/ branchs/ grass, etc.) on campus.
    Journal two - draw anything you feel like drawing during the week, something you think about, you see, or your hope.
